East Cork Beach Lifeguard Teams work with the RNLI & Irish Water Safety

We go about our work with pride putting safety in every stride.

By Hannah O' Sullivan, Senior Beach Lifeguard Claycastle Beachguard Station, Youghal.

The East Cork Beaches had a very successful Water Safety C.P.D. Session in July with the RNLI
and Irish Water Safety Instructors.  We trained at Claycastle Beach with teams from Front Strand, Claycastle, Redbarn & Garryvoe in attendance.

Attendance was very good and all beachguards were committed to getting the most out of the session.  Participating in these sessions helps to further gel the teams and assists us in working to our strengths and build on our techniques.

Much appreciation has to go to the RNLI Crew and the Irish Water Safety Instructors for their assistance with our training session.

The RNLI facilitated one hour.
The main points covered were as follows

- their equipment
- typical response times
- what we can do to work together
- a scenario with a type 1 diabetic (unconscious, breathing)

We continued land practicals with Irish Water Safety Instructors
Sean, Anne and John.

Main Scenarios covered:
- A lost child.
- An unconscious breathing subject.
- Emergency Action Planning & Normal Operating Procedures.
- Communication on the beach
- Use of A.E.D.
