Behind the scenes at a Beach Lifeguard Station

A Day in the life at Inchydoney Lifeguard Station

By Aideen Caulfield, Senior Beach Lifeguard Inchydoney Beachguard Team.

In this blog post you will learn about a typical day of a lifeguard in one of Cork’s busiest beaches, Inchydoney.

For the month of July 2017, the Inchydoney Team handled 2 rescue situations, 15 first aids & prevented 400 accidents.

A Typical day at our station:
Our Team in Inchydoney 2017

10.15am- The team arrives at the station, full of the joys of life,  and gets everything ready for the day ahead.

10.25am- Sea & weather conditions are assessed. A decision is made on what flag to fly for the day.

10.30am- The Main flag is raised.  All safety & communication equipment is checked.

10.35am- Flags and boards are placed on both beaches and the patrolling begins for the day.

11.30am- Patrol number 2 begins. (To allow for maximum concentration we swap patrols every hour to allow for each lifeguard to have an adequate break between patrols).

10.30-7pm- Station lifeguards are constantly watching & patrolling both beaches and are there to assist the public if required.

At different times throughout the day, the team members engage in training.
The daily log is filled out at regular intervals.  In the log we record the sea conditions, first aids, rescues, tides and the advice given throughout the day.

6.50pm- Flags and boards are collected from both beaches. While these are being collected there is someone sitting on the point watching both beaches.

7pm- The Station phone is switched off and walkie talkies are charged.  Blinds are closed and the station is locked up for the evening.

This is a summary of a typical day in Inchydoney, however, our job changes day to day due to the sea & weather conditions.

Our job is prevention.  We do have to deal with rescue situations throughout the season and we also provide first aid as required.
At the end of the day ‘prevention is better than the cure’
